Recognition A–Z / Research and evidence

Independent assurance

Independent assurance is a defined engagement with a specified subject, scope and conclusion. It is not a synonym for general confidence or internal review.

What to review

Read who performed the engagement, what was covered and which standard or criteria applied. Check exclusions before repeating a claim of assurance.

A practical example

An engagement checking selected figures may not cover the methodology or every narrative claim. Its conclusion should not be broadened to the entire publication.

Keep the claim in scope

Do not describe a pre-assurance or internally reviewed result as independently assured.

Research and editorial context

A result is meaningful within its methodology. Match the research question, assessed universe and measurement period before making a comparison. These reference notes explain evaluation concepts; they do not add indicators, weights or thresholds to any published WCRC study.

Examples illustrate a decision and do not describe a named organisation's conduct. This is a reference note, not a new research finding or an award outcome.
