The Decathlon story

Michel Leclercq opened the first Decathlon store in Englos, near Lille, in 1976. His idea was a large store where people could find equipment for many sports at accessible prices. Decathlon began designing its own products in the 1980s and grew into one of the largest sporting goods retailers.

What makes Decathlon powerful

Decathlon makes sport accessible. It designs most of what it sells through its own brands, such as Quechua, Kipsta and Domyos, which lets it keep prices low. Products like the Quechua pop-up tent and the Easybreath snorkel mask show its practical innovation.

Decathlon today

Decathlon SE is majority owned by the Mulliez family and led by Barbara Martin Coppola. It operates stores in many countries and has expanded online. Decathlon runs repair, second-hand and rental services to extend product life.

What comes next for Decathlon

Decathlon's road ahead is to grow internationally, especially in digital channels, and to build circular services into its model.
