Recognition A–Z / Business publishing

Sponsored content and editorial labels

Sponsored content and independent editorial have different relationships with the subject. Clear labelling helps readers understand the context in which material was produced.

What to review

Check how commissioned work is identified and whether commercial participation is separated from research qualification. Keep disclosures close to the content.

A practical example

A paid communication package can describe an assessed achievement accurately. It should not imply that the payment created or improved the underlying result.

Keep the claim in scope

Do not disguise advertising or make unsupported claims about another publisher's commercial practices.

Research and editorial context

Readers should be able to distinguish reporting, analysis and commissioned communication. Read sources and disclosures before treating an article as evidence for a comparative claim. The guides here do not rank publishers or promise coverage, audience growth or search placement.

Examples illustrate a decision and do not describe a named organisation's conduct. This is a reference note, not a new research finding or an award outcome.
