WCRC analysis
HDFC Bank ranks second overall in WCRC 1000 2026 with ranking market capitalisation of ₹1,516,170.94 crore. ICICI Bank is fifth at ₹998,876.86 crore, and State Bank of India is sixth at ₹805,248.09 crore. The figures refer to the published 1 July–31 December 2025 measurement window. They should not be described as current market values on the date of this briefing.
The three values sum to ₹3,320,295.89 crore, approximately ₹33.20 lakh crore. This total is useful for describing this selected group only. It excludes other banks and financial-services companies in the ranking. It is neither a banking-sector market-capitalisation total nor a measure of deposits, lending or the financial system’s assets. Readers should be able to see the denominator before being shown a share or concentration claim.
WCRC’s analytical point is that market scale and operating quality answer different questions. Equity market capitalisation is an observable market-based measure used here to order eligible listed companies. It does not, by itself, show whether a bank offers better service, has a stronger credit book or treats customers more fairly. A piece about those questions would need financial disclosures, regulatory context and appropriately dated operating measures.
The methodology also changes how a headline should be written. This edition uses historical average values rather than a single closing price. For the selected companies, WCRC publishes the NSE average and the BSE average and takes their arithmetic mean. Adding the two exchange figures would count the same company twice and produce a misleading result. The values in the accompanying table are the published ranking values, with their original precision retained.
The edition is marked pre-assurance. That status belongs in any reuse of the research, including a company newsroom citation or a chart caption. It would be inaccurate to present these positions as independently assured awards. A large position in the table also carries no prediction about share-price returns. This briefing provides descriptive research context, not an investment recommendation.
For a banking or business desk, the useful story is how clearly defined historical market measures shape a ranking of large Indian companies. The positions of these three banks offer a concrete starting point. The next reporting step is to compare like-for-like operating information for the same period and ask the companies about any factual discrepancy. That additional work has not been carried out here and should not be implied by the ranking.
Evidence boundaries
This is a deliberately selected three-bank comparison, not an exhaustive sector classification. The period is historical, the edition is pre-assurance, and no claims about current valuation, financial resilience or customer outcomes follow from these ranking values.
