The Nespresso story

Nestlé engineer Eric Favre developed the idea for Nespresso after studying how Italian baristas made espresso. Nestlé launched the system in 1986, first for offices, then for homes. The Nespresso Club, which let members order capsules directly, became the foundation of the brand.

What makes Nespresso powerful

Nespresso created the premium single-serve coffee category. Its boutiques, its direct relationship with members and its "What else?" advertising made coffee at home feel like a luxury. The Vertuo system extended the range to larger cups for markets such as the United States.

Nespresso today

Nespresso is part of Nestlé and based in Lausanne. It became a certified B Corporation in 2022. The brand runs capsule recycling schemes in many countries and its AAA Sustainable Quality Program works with coffee farmers.

What comes next for Nespresso

Nespresso's next phase is about growing in North America, reducing its environmental footprint, including through paper-based capsules, and defending its position against new rivals.
