What makes Nespresso powerful

Nespresso's power is sensory before it is anything else. Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience scores 92, its highest WCRC parameter: the coloured aluminium capsules, the sound of the machine and the design of its boutiques make a cup of coffee feel like an event. That helps make Product, Innovation & Delivery its strongest pillar at 80.0. Nespresso runs 802 boutiques in 515 cities, and its Vertuo system, built for several cup sizes, was the main driver of growth in 2025. Its closed system keeps customers returning to the brand for every refill.

Positioning is the second pillar of its strength, at 79.6. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 90. 'What else?', made famous by George Clooney, still sums up a brand that sells premium coffee at home and nothing less, and Brand Personality Coherence scores 88. The brand keeps it fresh: 2026's Vertuo World campaign with Dua Lipa is its largest ever, and a partnership with The Weeknd took the Samra Origins coffee line to 25 markets. E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability scores 90, because Nespresso sells directly through its own site, app and boutiques, and in 2025 the app raised basket value and purchase frequency.

The weak side is waste and margin. Sustainability, Governance & ESG is its lowest pillar at 64.0, and Circular Economy & Waste Reduction scores 56, because only about a quarter of capsules are recycled worldwide. Record coffee prices cut the underlying trading operating profit margin to 17.9% in 2025, down 210 basis points, even as sales reached CHF6.5bn with 6.0% organic growth. Nespresso's power lies in owning a ritual. Keeping it depends on solving the capsule question.

Why Nespresso ranks #59

Nespresso's brand power rests on a sensory experience few consumer brands match, a direct relationship with its customers and a positioning that has barely changed in decades. Product, Innovation & Delivery, at 80.0, is its strongest WCRC pillar.

  1. 3.06Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience92

Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience: coloured capsules, distinctive machines and 802 boutiques in 515 cities turn coffee into a ritual. It is Nespresso's highest-scoring parameter, at 92.

  2. 5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability90

E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability: Nespresso sells directly through its website, app and boutiques. In 2025 direct-to-consumer and e-retail were growth drivers, and the app raised basket value and purchase frequency.

  3. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence90

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: 'What else?' has stood for premium coffee at home for two decades, and the 2026 Vertuo World campaign with Dua Lipa carries the same idea to a younger audience.

The Achilles' heel

4.09Circular Economy & Waste Reduction56

Circular Economy & Waste Reduction scores 56, Nespresso's lowest. Only about 24.6% of its capsules are recycled worldwide, and capsule waste is the most common criticism of the brand.

What would move it: Lifting recycling rates with more collection points, home-compostable or paper-based capsules across the range, and audited annual recycling figures would address the brand's most visible weakness.

The 2026 story

Nespresso grew in 2025 despite record coffee prices. Sales reached CHF6.5bn, with organic growth of 6.0%, mostly from pricing. Vertuo led the growth, North America rose by double digits, and out-of-home sales to hotels, restaurants and cafés grew mid single digits. Europe was harder, with flat organic growth in the fourth quarter.

In 2026 Nespresso launched Vertuo World, its largest global campaign to date, with Dua Lipa as Global Brand Ambassador and the Vertuo Up machine aimed at Gen Z. Its parent also changed: former Nespresso head Philipp Navratil became Nestlé's CEO in 2025 and announced around 16,000 job cuts across the group.

The pressure points are cost and waste. The underlying trading operating profit margin fell 210 basis points to 17.9% in 2025 as coffee costs rose, and capsule recycling remains low. Turmoil at Nestlé's top weighs on governance perceptions for the whole group.

WCRC analysis

Nespresso's reported sales barely moved in five years, between CHF6.37bn and CHF6.48bn, while its segment profit fell every year, from CHF1,475m in 2021 to CHF1,160m in 2025. The margin dropped from 23.0% to 17.9%. In 2025 alone, organic growth of 6.0% shrank to under 2% in Swiss francs.

The flat line in francs hides real demand: pricing and Vertuo kept sales growing in local currencies, while a strong franc and record coffee costs ate into profit. The brand still commands loyalty and premium prices, but the shrinking margin shows its power is being tested by costs it does not control.
