The Prada story
Mario Prada and his brother Martino opened a leather goods shop in Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in 1913. In 1919 the shop became an official supplier to the Italian royal house. Mario's granddaughter Miuccia Prada took over in 1978 and, with her husband Patrizio Bertelli, turned the house into a global fashion brand.
What makes Prada powerful
Prada's power comes from intellectual, design-led fashion. Its black nylon backpacks of the 1980s challenged luxury conventions, and its collections continue to set the agenda. The Fondazione Prada in Milan connects the house with contemporary art. Miu Miu, its sister brand, has become one of the fastest-growing names in fashion.

Prada S.p.A. is listed in Hong Kong and controlled by the Prada and Bertelli families. Andrea Guerra is chief executive of the group, which in 2025 agreed to acquire Versace. Prada makes most of its products in its own Italian factories and invests in training craftspeople.
What comes next for Prada
The road ahead for Prada is to keep Prada and Miu Miu growing while integrating Versace and preparing for generational change in leadership.
