The Ryanair story
Ryanair was founded in Ireland in 1984 by Tony Ryan, Christopher Ryan and Liam Lonergan. Its first route, in 1985, linked Waterford in south-east Ireland with London Gatwick using a 15-seat aircraft. In the early 1990s, under Michael O'Leary, it rebuilt itself as a low-fares airline modelled on Southwest Airlines in the United States.
What makes Ryanair powerful
Ryanair's power is price. By flying one type of aircraft, the Boeing 737, using secondary airports and turning planes around quickly, it brought air travel within reach of millions of people. It is now Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, and its blue and yellow livery is seen at airports across the continent.
