The Spotify story

Spotify was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, at a time when music piracy was rampant. Their idea was a legal streaming service that was easier to use than piracy. It launched in 2008 with free, ad-supported listening and a paid premium tier, and it reached the United States in 2011.

What makes Spotify powerful

Spotify changed how the world listens. Its personalised playlists, such as Discover Weekly, and its recommendation engine create a daily habit. Its annual Wrapped campaign turns listeners into marketers each December. Spotify has expanded from music into podcasts and audiobooks, becoming a broad audio platform.
