The Swatch story

Swatch was launched in 1983 when the Swiss watch industry was losing out to cheap quartz watches from Asia. The plastic Swatch, made with far fewer parts than a normal watch, was affordable, colourful and Swiss made.

What makes Swatch powerful

Swatch's power comes from fun. Its watches turned the timepiece into a fashion item that people bought in multiples, and limited editions and artist collaborations built collector demand. In 2022 the MoonSwatch, made with Omega, drew queues around the world.

Swatch today

The Swatch Group, built by Nicolas G. Hayek, is headquartered in Biel/Bienne. It owns Omega, Longines, Tissot, Breguet and Blancpain, and makes many of the parts used by the Swiss watch industry. His son Nick Hayek is CEO.

What comes next for Swatch

Swatch faces weak demand in China and tariffs in the United States. Its task is to keep its brands desirable while it waits for the watch market to recover.
