Recognition A–Z / Business and management

Business case assumptions

A business case depends on assumptions about demand, cost and timing. Decision-makers need to see which assumptions have the greatest effect on the proposed outcome.

What to review

Identify the evidence behind important estimates and the point at which a review is required. Keep alternative scenarios consistent.

A practical example

A project attractive under immediate adoption may look different if customers take longer to change. The timing assumption should be explicit.

Keep the claim in scope

This guide does not make investment recommendations or supply financial forecasts for a named company.

Research and editorial context

A useful management framework makes a decision easier to examine. It should identify its assumptions and the evidence needed to challenge them. These notes are practical WCRC interpretation, not measured outcomes or recommendations for investing in a particular company.

Examples illustrate a decision and do not describe a named organisation's conduct. This is a reference note, not a new research finding or an award outcome.
