Recognition A–Z / Research and evidence

Unit of assessment

The unit of assessment is the entity or activity to which a result applies. A person, brand, operating company and corporate group require different evidence.

What to review

Identify the named unit before collecting documents. Check whether shared group policies describe the unit's actual operations and whether local exceptions are captured.

A practical example

A global policy document can show a group's stated approach. It cannot alone establish that every site implements the policy in the same way.

Keep the claim in scope

Apply results to the assessed unit. Extending them to a parent, subsidiary or product needs a separate basis.

Research and editorial context

A result is meaningful within its methodology. Match the research question, assessed universe and measurement period before making a comparison. These reference notes explain evaluation concepts; they do not add indicators, weights or thresholds to any published WCRC study.

Examples illustrate a decision and do not describe a named organisation's conduct. This is a reference note, not a new research finding or an award outcome.
