Shell

Shell is a British energy company, Shell plc, founded in 1907 and headquartered in London. Its name comes from a family business that imported seashells to London in 1833. Operating in more than 99 countries, it reported FY2025 revenue of US$266.9 billion, down 6.1%, and net income of US$18.1 billion, and its market value was about GBP 186 billion in July 2026. In April 2026 it agreed to buy Canada's ARC Resources for about US$16.4 billion as it refocuses on upstream and LNG. Its forecourts make it a top-of-mind fuel brand worldwide. WCRC's research found Shell strongest in the distinctiveness of its pecten logo, one of the most recognised marks in the world, in financial stability, in brand recall and in the reach of its global supply chain.

What WCRC found

  1. One of the world's most recognised logos: the Shell pecten.

  2. Strong financial stability, with FY2025 net income of US$18.1 billion.

  3. High recall and global reach, with forecourts and supply operations in more than 99 countries.

What holds it back: Scaled-back low-carbon targets, greenwashing criticism and Nigeria oil-spill liabilities weaken trust in its sustainability claims.
