What makes Cadillac powerful

Cadillac is General Motors' luxury brand, and GM is using it to lead two big shifts: electric cars and global motorsport. For generations its crest has stood for American comfort and size, from the Escalade to its classic sedans. Now it is adding new buyers to that legacy.

In May 2026 GM said Cadillac had sold more than 100,000 electric vehicles in the US since the Lyriq launched in 2022. About 75% of buyers of its Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq and Escalade IQ models were new to Cadillac, and many came from Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus. In the first quarter of 2026 Cadillac held 4.4% of the US electric vehicle market, ahead of BMW, Lexus, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. Its new Formula 1 team now carries the name to a global audience.

Cadillac passed 100,000 US electric vehicle sales in May 2026, less than four years after the Lyriq launched, and about three in four of its EV buyers were new to the brand.

Why Cadillac ranks #97

Cadillac sits at #97 with a WCRC Power Score of 68.08, just behind Verizon and United Airlines and just ahead of 3M and DoorDash. It scores well on positioning and recall, as a long-established American name, and on product and innovation through its electric lineup. It trails the brands above in scale of everyday customer contact. Its Formula 1 entry and strong EV conquest sales keep it narrowly ahead of 3M and DoorDash.

The Achilles' heel

Cadillac's Achilles' heel is the fight for luxury buyers against German brands and electric newcomers. Even with its EV gains, Rivian outsold it in US electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, with 10,365 sales and a 4.8% share. Cadillac once planned to sell only electric cars by 2030 but has since said gas models are likely to stay in its lineup beyond then, a sign of how uncertain the shift to EVs has become.

The 2026 story

Cadillac's 2026 story is its arrival in Formula 1. The GM-backed team became the 11th team on the grid and made its debut at the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March 2026. Sergio Perez finished 16th, while Valtteri Bottas retired after 15 laps. GM chief executive Mary Barra attended the race, and team CEO Dan Towriss said the weekend "went so well." Off the track, sales kept building. In the first quarter Cadillac sold just over 9,500 EVs in the US, up 19.8%, and in May it passed 100,000 total US EV sales.
