What makes Delta powerful
Delta has built its brand on getting people there on time. Cirium named it the most on-time airline in North America for 2025, the fifth year in a row. Across 1.8 million flights, 80.9% arrived within 15 minutes of schedule. Delta was also the only US carrier in Cirium's global top 10 for punctuality, a record that business travelers notice and pay for.
Delta earns much of its money beyond the basic ticket. Nearly 60% of its revenue comes from premium products, loyalty and other non-ticket sources. Its partnership with American Express, built on the co-branded SkyMiles cards, brought in about $8 billion in 2025. Delta is investing to keep that premium edge. In January 2026 it ordered 30 Boeing 787-10 jets, with options for 30 more, for mid-range international routes, with deliveries due to begin in 2031.
Delta was the only US airline in Cirium's global top 10 for on-time performance in 2025.
Why Delta ranks #23
Delta is #23 with a WCRC Power Score of 75.01, almost level with IBM above it and Adobe below. Its reliability record and premium service give it strong consumer trust and recall for an airline. Marriott and IBM edge ahead on scale and long-term financial steadiness, while Delta's profits swing with fuel and demand. It stays just above Adobe and Salesforce because travelers deal with the brand in person, not only on a screen.
The Achilles' heel
Delta's weak spots are fuel and technology. In 2026 it expects its fuel costs to rise by about $6 billion for the year. Its July 2024 IT meltdown, triggered by a faulty CrowdStrike software update, caused about 7,000 canceled flights. Delta sued CrowdStrike over the outage, and a judge allowed that suit to proceed in May 2025. One bad week can undo years of reliability marketing.
The 2026 story
Delta leaned on premium travelers in 2026. In January it forecast earnings growth of about 20% for the year and placed its Boeing 787-10 order. A surge in fuel prices then added about $6 billion to its expected fuel bill. Even so, on Oct. 9, 2026, Delta reported record revenue for a September quarter, up about 16% from a year earlier. It guided to fourth-quarter revenue growth of about 20%, but cut its full-year earnings outlook and now expects pre-tax profit of about $4.5 billion.
