What makes Estée Lauder powerful

Estée Lauder is the name behind a stable of prestige beauty brands that shoppers seek out by name. Beyond its founding Estée Lauder line, the group owns Clinique, M·A·C, La Mer, Jo Malone London, TOM FORD beauty, Le Labo and The Ordinary, and it sells them around the world. That spread across skincare, makeup and fragrance gives the brand a place on bathroom shelves from New York to Shanghai.

Fragrance is now its fastest-growing engine. In fiscal 2026 fragrance organic net sales rose 10%, led by Le Labo, TOM FORD and KILIAN PARIS. The company is also reaching shoppers where they now buy. It has expanded onto Amazon and TikTok Shop, and M·A·C has moved into select Sephora stores in the US. Those moves widen a brand long tied to the department store counter.

Fragrance organic net sales at Estée Lauder rose 10% in fiscal 2026, led by Le Labo, TOM FORD and KILIAN PARIS.

Why Estée Lauder ranks #66

Estée Lauder sits at #66 with a WCRC Power Score of 71.48. It ranks just behind HP and Johnson & Johnson and just ahead of Gatorade and Fidelity. It scores well on positioning and recall in prestige beauty and on product and innovation through its fragrance houses. A long restructuring has weighed on its digital and financial strength, which keeps it a step behind J&J. Its global spread keeps it ahead of the US-focused brands below.

The Achilles' heel

Estée Lauder's weak spot is its reliance on travel retail in Asia, which remains uneven, and the cost of fixing past mistakes. To reset, the company is cutting a net of about 10,000 positions under its Beauty Reimagined plan, which it expects to deliver about $1.2 billion in annual gross benefits. A shrinking workforce and fragile duty-free demand leave little room for error.

The 2026 story

Estée Lauder spent 2026 testing how far its turnaround could go. In March reports emerged that it was in merger talks with Spain's Puig, owner of Charlotte Tilbury, in a deal that would have created a company worth close to $40 billion, and its shares fell about 20%. The talks ended in May. Chief executive Stéphane de La Faverie said the company would press ahead with its Beauty Reimagined plan. On 19 August it reported organic net sales growth of 5% in the fourth quarter, with mainland China up 9% organically for the year, and raised its margin outlook for fiscal 2027.
