What makes MasterCard powerful
Mastercard is one of the two networks that make card payments work around the world. Its brand promises that a card will be accepted and that the payment will be safe, and its marketing gives a payments company an unusually warm image. Its acceptance network covers hundreds of millions of merchant locations around the world.
The brand is moving fast into new ways to pay. Its Mastercard Move service reaches more than 17 billion endpoints for sending money. In August 2026 it completed the purchase of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK, and in October it launched a Global Money Platform that lets businesses hold, convert and spend both regular currencies and stablecoins. It is also building trust tools for purchases made by AI agents through its Agent Pay program.
Mastercard Move, the company's money transfer service, can reach more than 17 billion endpoints.
Why MasterCard ranks #14
Mastercard sits at #14 in the US ranking, a fraction behind WhatsApp at #13 and ahead of American Express at #15 and Nike at #16. It scores strongly on consumer trust and on digital and financial strength, thanks to its global acceptance. WhatsApp and McDonald's edge ahead on daily reach and recall. Mastercard stays above American Express because its cards are accepted in more places and used by a wider range of people.
The Achilles' heel
Mastercard's weak spot is the fee model that funds its network. Regulators and merchants keep pushing to cut card costs. In October 2025 Visa and Mastercard agreed to pay $199.5 million to settle a US merchant class action over chargeback rules that shifted fraud costs onto stores. Account-to-account and stablecoin payments also offer ways around cards.
The 2026 story
Mastercard's 2026 story is its push beyond the plastic card. In August 2026 it completed its acquisition of BVNK, a stablecoin payments company. In September it launched Wallet Pay to scale digital wallets worldwide. Later that month it added new trust and intelligence services to Agent Pay, starting with a score that estimates whether an AI agent started a transaction. On October 15, 2026, Mastercard and BVNK launched the Global Money Platform, with Nuvei and Marqeta among the first to integrate.
