What makes Monster powerful

Monster built an energy drink empire on a black can and a green claw. Its growth now leans heavily on markets abroad. In the first quarter of 2026, sales in its Monster Energy Drinks segment rose 27.6%, and about 45% of company sales came from outside the US, up from 40% a year earlier.

Monster's reach rests on a powerful partner. Coca-Cola took a 16.7% stake in 2015 under a partnership that moved Monster into Coca-Cola's bottling system around the world. The brand also stays close to its young fans through action sports and music. It keeps adding flavors and lines, such as zero-sugar Ultra drinks, which helped lift sales in 2025, and FLRT, a new line aimed at women, so it can reach new buyers without diluting the core can.

Coca-Cola took a 16.7% stake in Monster in 2015, linking the energy drink to Coca-Cola's global bottling network.

Why Monster ranks #43

Monster ranks #43 with a WCRC Power Score of 73.78, almost level with Colgate and Uber above it and just ahead of UPS and LinkedIn. Its strength is product and innovation, plus strong digital and financial results driven by fast global growth. It has strong recall among younger buyers. It sits below Colgate because energy drinks raise health questions that weigh on consumer trust and on sustainability and governance, while toothpaste carries no such doubt.

The Achilles' heel

Monster's main risk is fresh competition aimed at buyers it does not reach well. Celsius paid $1.8 billion in 2025 for Alani Nu, a brand popular with women, and turned it into a direct threat in that segment. Monster answered in the first quarter of 2026 with FLRT, a line aimed at female drinkers. Monster has also raised prices, which can test buyer loyalty if costs keep climbing.

The 2026 story

Monster had a strong start to 2026. In May it reported first-quarter net sales up 26.9% to a record, the first time it topped $2 billion in a first quarter. CEO Hilton Schlosberg said, "We remain focused on the growth of our existing core offerings." Sales outside the US jumped 44.9% in the quarter. FLRT, its female-focused line built to compete with Celsius's Alani Nu, was already counted in its core energy drinks segment. The quarter followed a 2025 in which sugar-free Ultra drinks helped sales beat Wall Street estimates.
