What makes State Farm powerful

State Farm's power comes from its neighborhood agents and its sheer size. Its agents sell auto, home and life coverage from local offices in communities across the country. As a mutual company, it is owned by its policyholders rather than by outside shareholders.

That structure let it share a strong year with customers. State Farm earned $12.9 billion in net income in 2025, up from $5.3 billion a year earlier, as its auto insurance business swung to a $4.6 billion underwriting gain. It then announced a one-time $5 billion cash dividend for qualifying auto customers, paid in 2026. Its net worth reached $170 billion at the end of 2025, up from $145.2 billion. That financial cushion lets it pay large claims and still return money to the people it insures, which backs up the agent's promise at the kitchen table.

State Farm returned a one-time $5 billion cash dividend to qualifying auto insurance customers in 2026 after a strong 2025.

Why State Farm ranks #76

State Farm sits at #76 with a WCRC Power Score of 70.48, tied with Morgan Stanley and Barbie and just behind Coach. Its agent network and long-running jingle give it strong positioning and recall. Its pullback in the California home insurance market weighs on consumer trust compared with the brands just above. Its financial strength and large auto dividend keep it level with Morgan Stanley and Barbie and ahead of BlackRock.

The Achilles' heel

State Farm's Achilles' heel is home insurance in high-risk states. After the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, it told California regulators that the expected fire losses put its finances in peril. Customers there got a 17% emergency rate increase. Its homeowners and related lines lost $3.1 billion on underwriting in 2025. Under a March 2026 settlement, it agreed to limit non-renewals and cancellations during 2026.

The 2026 story

State Farm's 2026 story is about sharing a profit rebound while repairing trust in California. On 26 February it reported 2025 net income of $12.9 billion and announced a one-time $5 billion cash dividend for qualifying auto customers. By then it had paid more than $5 billion in claims from the Los Angeles wildfires and expected total payments to reach $7 billion. In March it reached a settlement in California, later approved, that keeps its 17% homeowners rate increase in place. The deal also limits non-renewals in 2026 and refunds some condo and rental customers.
