What makes Taco Bell powerful

Taco Bell has turned cheap, playful Mexican-inspired food into one of the strongest growth stories in fast food. Its brand mixes low prices, bold menu ideas and late-night appeal, and it speaks to young diners in a voice few rivals can copy. That formula keeps it winning customers from other chains.

The numbers show it. In the fourth quarter of 2025 Taco Bell's US same-store sales rose 7%, on top of a 5% gain a year earlier, and Yum! Brands chief executive Chris Turner said the chain had gained "sustainable" market share, especially among families and diners aged 18 to 24. In the second quarter of 2026 its US same-store sales rose another 7%, and digital orders reached a record 47% of sales.

Taco Bell's US same-store sales rose 7% in the fourth quarter of 2025, on top of a 5% rise a year earlier.

Why Taco Bell ranks #92

Taco Bell sits at #92 with a WCRC Power Score of 68.88, just behind Harley-Davidson and Warner Bros. and just ahead of its sister brand KFC and Pfizer. It scores well on positioning and recall, thanks to a distinct voice and menu, and on digital strength. A food-safety scare in 2026 dented consumer trust, which keeps it behind the brands above. Its strong growth record and quick recovery keep it narrowly ahead of KFC and Pfizer.

The Achilles' heel

Taco Bell's Achilles' heel is food safety and the trust it underpins. In early July 2026 a multistate cyclospora outbreak, with lettuce named as a likely source, hit the chain. Weekly foot traffic fell as much as 20% at the peak, and third-quarter same-store sales fell 4%, its first decline in about six years. For a brand built on fresh, fun food at low prices, a repeat would hurt.

The 2026 story

Taco Bell's 2026 is a test of resilience. It entered the year on a high, and US same-store sales rose 7% in the second quarter. Then a multistate cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce struck in early July. On 3 November 2026 Yum! Brands reported that Taco Bell's same-store sales fell 4% in the third quarter. Health authorities declared the outbreak over in October, and same-store sales were up about 1% early in the fourth quarter. Chris Turner said newly won customers were spending 5% more and visiting 6% more often than the ones the chain lost.
