What makes Tide powerful

Tide has led American laundry rooms for most of the past 80 years. Procter & Gamble launched it in 1946 as the first heavy-duty synthetic detergent, and by the early 1950s it held more than 30% of the laundry market. That head start became a habit passed down through generations of shoppers.

Tide keeps its lead by changing the format of laundry itself. Tide Pods arrived in 2012 and grew into a business worth more than $2 billion a year for P&G. In 2026 the brand followed with Tide evo, a dry, fiber-based tile backed by 50 patents. The bright orange bottle is one of the most recognized sights in any store aisle, and P&G's scale lets Tide fund research, advertising and wide distribution that smaller rivals cannot match.

Tide sold out quickly after its 1946 launch, and in 2006 the American Chemical Society named its development a National Historic Chemical Landmark.

Why Tide ranks #47

Tide ranks #47 with a WCRC Power Score of 73.48, a hair behind LinkedIn and Eli Lilly and just ahead of Caterpillar and Pepsi. Its strengths are consumer trust and positioning and recall, built over eight decades. It lacks the growth and digital pull of the brands above it. It stays ahead of Caterpillar and Pepsi thanks to steady product and innovation, from pods to tiles, and a reputation for performance that keeps buyers loyal.

The Achilles' heel

Tide's weak spot is price. It is a premium brand in a category where cheaper options are always on the next shelf. In January 2026, P&G's quarterly sales fell short of analyst estimates as US demand for household essentials softened and shoppers stayed cautious. If budgets stay tight, store brands and value detergents can chip away at Tide's loyal base.

The 2026 story

Tide's 2026 story is its biggest format change since pods. In February 2026, P&G launched Tide evo nationally, a dry detergent tile that dissolves in water and comes in recyclable paperboard packaging with no plastic bottle. A 42-tile box sells for about $20, and Marchoe Northern, president of P&G Fabric Care, put the cost at about 48 cents a load, well above liquid detergent. P&G is betting the tile can follow the path of Pods. The launch came in the first months of Shailesh Jejurikar's term as P&G president and CEO, which began on January 1, 2026.
