What makes Visa powerful
Visa's brand stands for one thing: the payment goes through. Shoppers rarely think about the network behind their card, and that quiet reliability is the point. Visa connects banks, merchants and consumers, and it earns a small fee on a huge share of the world's card spending.
The scale is hard to match. Visa says it counts about 5 billion payment credentials and more than 175 million merchant locations worldwide, and it works with about 14,500 financial institutions in more than 200 countries and territories. Its network handled 329 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 2025. Visa is now pushing beyond cards, with stablecoin-powered payouts through Visa Direct and a live pilot of payments made by AI agents.
Visa's network handled 329 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 2025, roughly 900 million a day.
Why Visa ranks #11
Visa sits at #11 in the US ranking, a whisker behind Costco at #10 and ahead of McDonald's at #12 and WhatsApp at #13. It scores very high on consumer trust and on digital and financial strength, because its network is accepted almost everywhere. Costco and Coca-Cola edge ahead on emotional connection with consumers. Visa stays above McDonald's and WhatsApp because its brand is trusted across almost every country and spending occasion.
The Achilles' heel
Visa's biggest risk is pressure on the fees that fund it. In September 2024 the US Justice Department sued Visa for monopolizing debit, saying its network handles just over 60% of US debit transactions and collects more than $7 billion a year in fees. Merchants and lawmakers also keep pushing to cut card costs, while real-time payment systems offer a way to move money without cards.
The 2026 story
Visa spent 2026 extending its network into new kinds of payments. In October 2026 Visa Direct moved stablecoin-powered money movement from pilots into production. A few days later Visa, BILL and Billtrust launched a live pilot of AI agent payments between buyer and supplier platforms. On October 13, 2026, Visa said the People's Bank of China had approved its application to begin preparing a domestic bankcard clearing business in China. CEO Ryan McInerney described the approval as a significant step for a company that has operated in China for more than 40 years.
