What makes Xbox powerful

Xbox draws its power from Microsoft's backing and from one of the largest game libraries in the industry. Since its first console in 2001, the brand has grown from a single box into a network of consoles, PC games, studios and Game Pass, its subscription service. That breadth lets Xbox reach players on more than one screen and gives it a steady relationship with its fans.

Microsoft is also willing to invest to keep the brand strong. In February 2026 it put Asha Sharma, previously president of its CoreAI unit, in charge of Microsoft Gaming after Phil Spencer retired. In April Xbox cut the price of Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Sharma later told staff that since the cut "we have seen acquisitions grow and retention improve." With a new leader, lower prices and Microsoft's resources, Xbox has room to win back players.

Asha Sharma, who took charge of Microsoft Gaming in 2026, came to Xbox from Microsoft's CoreAI unit, where she was president.

Why Xbox ranks #50

Xbox sits at #50 with a WCRC Power Score of 73.16, just behind Pepsi and Caterpillar and just ahead of Tesla and Levi's. Its positioning and recall are strong, and Microsoft's backing supports its digital and financial strength. But falling hardware sales and a strategy reset under new leadership weigh on its product and consumer trust scores, which keeps it behind Pepsi and Caterpillar. Its large library and subscription base keep it narrowly ahead of Tesla.

The Achilles' heel

Xbox's Achilles' heel is hardware. Xbox hardware revenue fell 14% from a year earlier in the July to September 2026 quarter, and Xbox content and services revenue fell 2%. Earlier, game subscriber losses had sped up after 2025 price and plan changes. In a May memo, Sharma told staff, "We will not solve this in one moment or one launch," and said the team faced "hard choices about what we build." Winning back console buyers is its central test.

The 2026 story

Xbox's 2026 is a year of new leadership. Phil Spencer retired after 38 years at Microsoft, and Asha Sharma took over Microsoft Gaming. Matt Booty became chief content officer, and Sarah Bond left. In April Xbox cut Game Pass prices to slow subscriber losses. In May Sharma told employees, "We are building a stronger XBOX." Microsoft has since set a goal of returning Xbox to growth within its 2027 fiscal year. Results for the July to September quarter, released in late October, showed hardware revenue still falling.
