The Chanel story
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel opened her first shop, selling hats, in Paris in 1910. She soon moved into clothing, freeing women from corsets with jersey dresses and simple lines. Chanel N°5 arrived in 1921, followed by the little black dress, the tweed suit and, in 1955, the quilted 2.55 bag. Few designers have shaped how women dress as much as she did.
What makes Chanel powerful
Chanel's power rests on a set of icons that have stayed relevant for a century. Karl Lagerfeld, who led the house from 1983 to 2019, refreshed those codes for new generations. The interlocking double-C, the camellia and the colour black make the brand instantly recognisable. Chanel controls its distribution tightly and does not sell its handbags online.
Chanel today
Chanel is privately owned by the Wertheimer family, whose ancestors backed the original perfume business. The company publishes annual results and is led by Global CEO Leena Nair. Chanel owns a network of specialist craft workshops, known as its Métiers d'art, that preserve embroidery, feather work, millinery and other skills.
What comes next for Chanel
Chanel's road ahead is to keep its codes fresh under new creative leadership while protecting the exclusivity that customers value. Its private ownership gives it the freedom to plan for the long term.
