The Louis Vuitton story

Louis Vuitton opened his trunk-making workshop in Paris in 1854. His flat-topped, stackable trunks suited a new age of rail and ocean travel. His son Georges created the Damier canvas and then, in 1896, the LV Monogram canvas, partly to stop copies. The family business grew into the most famous name in travel goods, and the company remains closely linked to its original workshop at Asnières, outside Paris.

What makes Louis Vuitton powerful

Louis Vuitton built its power on the Monogram, travel heritage and control of its own stores. It sells only through its own boutiques and website, which lets it manage price, service and presentation. Creative directors from Marc Jacobs to Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams brought ready-to-wear and cultural relevance, while bags such as the Speedy, Keepall and Neverfull remain constant sellers.

Louis Vuitton today

Louis Vuitton is the largest brand in LVMH, the world's biggest luxury group. It makes most of its leather goods in its own workshops in France, Spain and the United States, and continues to train craftspeople. The house uses exhibitions, flagship stores and major sporting partnerships to reach new audiences.

What comes next for Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton's challenge is scale. It must keep the Monogram desirable while serving a global clientele. Its control of distribution, its craft investment and its creative calendar give it the tools to manage that balance.
