#21 Chanel
Chanel is ranked #21 in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, with a WCRC Power Score of 78.88. Its clear, century-old positioning, the interlocking-C monogram and the No. 5 bottle give it one of the strongest Brand Positioning & Recall scores in luxury, even as demand in Asia softened.
Five WCRC pillars, 50 parameters, each scored 0 to 100 against global sector peers. The pillar weights set how much each one counts toward the Power Score.

How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 78.88.
Chanel's power comes from saying the same thing for more than a century. The house still stands for Gabrielle Chanel's idea of modern French elegance, and every category it sells, from tweed jackets to No. 5, carries that message. That consistency earns a score of 96 for Positioning Clarity & Coherence, Chanel's highest parameter, and lifts its Brand Positioning & Recall pillar to 86.7, 19th of the 100 brands in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026.
The second driver is the object itself. Product, Innovation & Delivery scores 81.6, also 19th overall, built on craftsmanship and control. Chanel owns many of the specialist ateliers that supply it, from embroiderers to shoemakers, and in July 2026 it added the Parisian shirtmaker Charvet. Its packaging is part of the brand: the No. 5 bottle and the black-and-white box score 89 for Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience, matching the interlocking-C monogram on Visual Identity Distinctiveness.
The money is solid, even in a slower luxury market. Chanel's 2025 revenue rose 1.8% on a comparable basis to US$19.3bn, operating profit rose 5.2% to US$4.7bn and free cash flow jumped 43.6%. It ended the year with US$1.6bn in net cash. The softer areas are trust and digital. Steep price rises drew criticism and sales in Asia-Pacific slipped 0.8%, holding Consumer Trust & Sentiment to 75.6, while Chanel's choice not to sell fashion online keeps Digital Presence & Financial Soundness at 77.5.
Why Chanel ranks #21
Chanel's three strongest WCRC parameters are all about recognition: a clear idea, a famous name and a monogram that people know on sight.
1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence96
Positioning Clarity & Coherence: Chanel has held the same position of timeless French luxury since Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop, across fashion, fragrance, beauty, watches and jewellery.
1.02Unaided Brand Recall90
Unaided Brand Recall: Chanel is one of the first names people give for luxury, helped by No. 5, the world-famous perfume named after the sample Gabrielle Chanel liked best.
1.10Visual Identity Distinctiveness89
Visual Identity Distinctiveness: the interlocking-C monogram, black and white, tweed and the quilted 2.55 bag are recognised worldwide without a logo in sight.
The Achilles' heel
4.09Circular Economy & Waste Reduction60
Circular Economy & Waste Reduction scores 60, Chanel's lowest parameter. The house publishes no data on repair volumes, resale, recycling or packaging waste, so its craftsmanship story stops short of the full product life cycle.
What would move it: Reporting repair and refurbishment volumes, packaging reduction and material recovery, building on its existing boutique repair services, would turn a quiet strength into evidence.
The 2026 story
Chanel entered 2026 with a new creative chapter. Matthieu Blazy showed his first collection as creative director in Paris in October 2025, and the house kept investing in craft, buying the Parisian shirtmaker Charvet on 2 July 2026 and appointing a new director for jewellery and watchmaking in October.
Results published on 19 May 2026 showed steady progress. Revenue for 2025 was US$19.3bn, up 1.8% on a comparable basis, with the Americas up 7.2%. Operating profit rose 5.2% to US$4.7bn, free cash flow rose 43.6% to US$2.6bn, and Chanel opened more than 40 boutiques.
The risk is fatigue at the top of the market. Years of steep price increases drew criticism, and Asia-Pacific sales slipped 0.8% in 2025. Chanel is betting that Blazy's designs and its control of craft will keep clients loyal without discounting.

WCRC analysis
Chanel's revenue rose about 23% over five years, from US$15.6bn in 2021 to US$19.3bn in 2025, with the peak in 2023 at about US$19.7bn. Operating profit tells a different story: it climbed to US$6.4bn in 2023, then fell 30% to US$4.5bn in 2024 as sales dipped and investment rose.
The operating margin fell from 34.9% in 2021 to 24.5% in 2025. That reflects heavy spending on boutiques, ateliers and brand activities rather than a loss of pricing power. Chanel still earns one of the highest margins in fashion, and the 2025 recovery suggests the brand is rebuilding from a stronger base.
Chanel is the third most powerful Luxury & Fashion brand in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, behind Hermès (#4) and Louis Vuitton (#16), and ahead of Cartier and Dior.
