The LEGO story

LEGO began in 1932 in Billund, a small town in western Denmark, where carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen made wooden toys. Two years later he named the business LEGO, from the Danish words "leg godt", meaning "play well". The company moved into plastic toys after the Second World War, and in 1958 it patented the stud-and-tube brick that still defines the brand. That single design decision created a system: every brick connects to every other brick, across generations of sets.

What makes LEGO powerful

LEGO's power comes from that system of play. Children learn through building, parents trust the quality and safety, and adults return as collectors and hobbyists. The brand has extended its reach through licensed themes, its own worlds such as LEGO City and LEGO Technic, the LEGO Movie franchise, LEGOLAND parks and the LEGO House in Billund. Few brands cross ages, cultures and price points so easily, and fewer still are recognised from a single shape.

LEGO today

The LEGO Group is still owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family, through the holding company KIRKBI, and by the LEGO Foundation. That ownership lets the company think long term. It produces bricks in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, the Czech Republic and China, and is building new factories to sit close to its customers. LEGO has also committed to making its products from renewable or recycled materials, a hard engineering task for a brick that must grip with precise clutch power.

What comes next for LEGO

The next chapter for LEGO is about keeping play physical in a digital age while meeting children where they are online. Digital experiences, games and partnerships sit alongside the brick, not in place of it. The material shift away from fossil-based plastic is the brand's largest long-term test, and its success will shape how parents judge the company for decades.
