What makes Microsoft powerful
Microsoft sells the tools that run modern work. Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn and the Azure cloud sit inside most large companies, so the brand is part of how millions of people spend their working day. That installed base gives Microsoft a direct route to sell new products, and it is now using that route to sell AI through Copilot.
Its AI position rests on a deep tie to OpenAI. Under a new agreement in October 2025, Microsoft took a stake of about 27% in OpenAI's for-profit arm, and OpenAI committed to buy $250 billion of Azure services. Demand for that cloud keeps climbing. In the quarter to September 2026, Azure grew 48%, and Microsoft said daily users of Copilot rose nearly 50% from the previous quarter.
Microsoft was founded in 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to write software for the Altair 8800 computer.
Why Microsoft ranks #5
Microsoft sits at #5 in the US ranking, a fraction of a point behind YouTube at #4 and just ahead of Netflix at #6 and Amazon at #7. It scores strongly on digital and financial strength and on product and innovation, thanks to Azure and Copilot. YouTube and Nvidia edge ahead on everyday reach and AI momentum. Microsoft stays above Netflix and Amazon because business customers trust it with their core systems.
The Achilles' heel
Microsoft is spending heavily on AI and must prove it pays off. It spent $45.2 billion on capital projects and finance leases in the September 2026 quarter, and free cash flow fell to about $18.6 billion from about $25.7 billion a year earlier. Reliability is the other risk. On October 29, 2025, a faulty change to Azure Front Door caused a global outage that took down Microsoft 365, Xbox and many customer sites.
The 2026 story
Microsoft reset its most important partnership in 2025. On October 28, 2025, OpenAI restructured as a public benefit corporation, and Microsoft took a stake of about 27% plus a $250 billion Azure commitment. A day later, a global Azure outage disrupted Microsoft 365 and Xbox for hours. In 2026 Microsoft kept building AI capacity. On October 28, 2026, it reported Azure growth of 48%, disclosed Azure revenue in dollars for the first time, and said demand still exceeded supply. Revenue from Windows licenses sold with new PCs and from devices fell 22%.
