Strong-hybrid powertrains have moved from a niche curiosity to a mainstream choice in India's mid-size SUV segment.\n\nUnlike mild hybrids, strong hybrids can drive short distances on electric power alone, which suits stop-start Indian city traffic and pushes certified efficiency figures close to 28 kmpl. Manufacturers including Toyota and Maruti Suzuki have said the technology allows meaningful emissions reduction without requiring charging infrastructure.\n\nThe open question is taxation. Strong hybrids currently attract higher GST than battery electric vehicles, and several state governments are evaluating whether an intermediate slab would accelerate adoption.
