Battery chemistry in 2026: LFP, NMC and what changes for Indian EV buyers
WCRC Auto Desk · 7 August 2026
LFP's thermal stability is reshaping mainstream EV design while NMC holds the range advantage.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells have become the default choice for mainstream electric cars sold in India, displacing nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry in several volume models.\n\nLFP offers greater thermal stability, longer cycle life and lower cost, at the expense of energy density. Manufacturers using structural battery packs argue that packaging gains offset the density penalty at the vehicle level.\n\nFor buyers, the practical implications are longer warranty confidence and better tolerance of frequent fast charging, balanced against slightly reduced cold-weather range.
