GreenLeaf Prism 250 recognizes the 250 Indian enterprises whose environmental, social, and governance practices set the pace for the country's sustainable growth. Presented as a single elite tier — not a numbered leaderboard — the list spans over 55 industries. Each company is measured on the GreenLeaf Prism Score (GPS) across five parameters: Environmental, Social, Governance, Innovation, and Transparency.

India's renewable energy capacity has grown nearly fourfold — from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW by June 2026 — on the way to a 500 GW non-fossil target by 2030.

Solar alone has grown 57-fold since 2013-14, from 2.82 GW to 162.15 GW, and now accounts for over half of India's total renewable capacity.

From Voluntary to Mandatory: The BRSR Core Assurance Wave

India's top 500 listed companies are now inside SEBI's mandatory verification net for FY 2025-26, requiring independent assessment or reasonable assurance on nine BRSR Core attributes — with full expansion to the top 1,000 companies by FY 2026-27. What was a narrative disclosure exercise is becoming a controls-and-audit exercise, and companies that treat it as paperwork rather than governance infrastructure will be the ones scrambling.

Value Chain Transparency Becomes the Next Frontier

ESG disclosure is expanding beyond a company's own operations to its suppliers and customers accounting for 2% or more of procurement or sales. Eased to voluntary in March 2025, this is widely expected to turn mandatory within two to three years — meaning today's voluntary early movers will hold a real head start over companies waiting for the mandate.

The Sprint to 500 GW

India's non-fossil power capacity has grown nearly fourfold since 2014, reaching 288.58 GW by June 2026 against a 2030 target of 500 GW. Corporates across manufacturing, IT, and retail are racing to lock in renewable power purchase agreements and captive solar/wind capacity — not just for compliance, but because energy cost and energy source are converging as competitive factors.

Across the GreenLeaf Prism 250 dataset, Innovation is the lowest-scoring parameter on average (90.2) against Governance's 94.3 — a real, measurable pattern in the data. It suggests companies have gotten good at compliance and disclosure infrastructure faster than they've built genuine sustainability-linked R&D. The gap between 'well-governed' and 'genuinely innovative' on sustainability is where the next differentiation will happen.

ESG Rating Providers Face Their Own Regulatory Scrutiny

SEBI's registration regime for ESG Rating Providers is tightening credibility standards across the ratings industry itself. As the raters get regulated, expect growing pressure on every ESG ranking and index — recognition-linked or not — to publish transparent, auditable methodology rather than opaque scores.

Green Finance Goes Mainstream

Public financial institutions — including PFC, REC, IREDA, and NaBFID — have deployed roughly ₹12.32 lakh crore into renewable energy projects, alongside USD 45.72 billion in FDI since FY2014. Sustainability-linked loans and bonds are turning ESG performance into a direct cost-of-capital lever, not just a reporting exercise.
