What makes Chipotle powerful

Chipotle built the fast-casual category around a short menu, food made in front of the customer and a promise of better ingredients. That simple formula still defines the brand. It now runs more than 4,200 restaurants across the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Mexico, the Middle East and South Korea, and it keeps adding hundreds more each year.

The brand has turned convenience into a strength. Digital orders made up 38.8% of food and beverage revenue in the third quarter of 2026. Its Chipotlane drive-through pickup lanes help too: 53 of the 84 company-owned restaurants it opened that quarter included one. Fans are loyal to the build-your-own burrito and bowl, and the company's "Food with Integrity" message gives it a clear identity that many fast-food rivals lack.

Chipotle's first restaurant in Asia opened in Seoul's Seocho District in 2026, through a joint venture with Sangmidang Holdings, formerly SPC Group.

Why Chipotle ranks #83

Chipotle sits at #83 with a WCRC Power Score of 70.08, just behind Charles Schwab and GEICO. It scores well on positioning and recall and on product and innovation, helped by a clear menu and a strong digital business. Schwab and GEICO edge ahead on consumer trust and financial strength. Chipotle stays ahead of Intel and Hyatt, just below, because its brand promise is simple and its growth story is easy for customers to see.

The Achilles' heel

Chipotle's Achilles' heel is food safety and the memory of past failures. In April 2020 it agreed to pay a $25 million criminal fine, then a record in a food safety case, to resolve federal charges tied to outbreaks that sickened more than 1,100 people. More recently, the risk has been traffic. Comparable restaurant sales fell 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The 2026 story

Chipotle began 2026 on the back foot. In early February it reported a 2.5% drop in fourth-quarter comparable sales and forecast roughly flat comparable sales for 2026. CEO Scott Boatwright's "Recipe for Growth" plan then began to show results. In the third quarter, comparable sales rose 2.1% and transactions grew 0.8%, and Chipotle now expects low single-digit comparable sales growth for the full year. The brand also pushed further abroad. It opened its first restaurant in Mexico in July and, in September 2026, made its debut in Asia with a restaurant in Seoul through a joint venture with Sangmidang Holdings.
