What makes Intel powerful
Intel's processors sit inside a large share of the world's personal computers, and its name has been a mark of quality on laptops and desktops for decades. Even after years of pressure from rivals, Intel still shipped 70.4% of client PC processors in the first quarter of 2026, according to Mercury Research data reported by Tom's Hardware and TechSpot.
The brand's power also comes from the depth of its ecosystem. PC makers, software developers and cloud providers build around Intel's x86 chips. In January 2026 at CES, Intel launched its Core Ultra Series 3 processors, code-named Panther Lake, the first chips made on its long-awaited 18A manufacturing process. Its Xeon server chips remain in demand too: in the third quarter of 2026 Intel announced plans for a multiyear collaboration with Oracle to expand Xeon-based computing on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
In October 2026 Intel released version 0.9 of its 14A process design kit, the manufacturing step that follows its 18A process.
Why Intel ranks #84
Intel sits at #84 with a WCRC Power Score of 69.96. It still has very high positioning and recall, and its product and innovation story improved in 2026. GEICO and Chipotle, just above it, score better on consumer trust and on steady financial strength. Intel stays ahead of Hyatt and Zoom, just below, because its chips reach far more people and industries, even if its turnaround is not yet finished.
The Achilles' heel
Intel's Achilles' heel is lost ground to AMD and the cost of its manufacturing turnaround. AMD took 46.2% of x86 server processor revenue in the first quarter of 2026, according to Mercury Research. Intel's contract chipmaking arm is still losing money: Intel Foundry posted an operating loss of $1,058 million in the third quarter of 2026, up from $782 million a year earlier.
The 2026 story
Under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel gained powerful new backing. In September 2025, Nvidia agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel and work with it on chips. In January 2026, Intel launched Core Ultra Series 3, its first processors built on the 18A process. In the third quarter of 2026, it completed a $23 billion public equity offering, announced plans to buy quantum software company Classiq and, in October, released version 0.9 of its 14A process design kit for chip designers.
