What makes Home Depot powerful

Home Depot is where many Americans go to fix, build and improve their homes, and it serves professional contractors as well as do-it-yourself shoppers. At the end of its second fiscal quarter of 2026 it ran 2,364 retail stores plus more than 1,340 SRS locations. SRS and GMS, both acquired companies, extend its reach into the specialty supplies that Pros buy in bulk.

Home Depot is investing in speed and service to keep those customers. In August 2026 it rolled out express delivery across all US markets, using more than 2,000 stores as local hubs and promising delivery in three hours or less for a flat fee. It is also pushing Magic Apron, its generative AI assistant, from the app and website into store aisles, where shoppers and associates can use it to find products and get answers. Second-quarter sales rose 5.7% in fiscal 2026, ahead of the company's own expectations.

Home Depot's nationwide express delivery uses more than 2,000 stores as local hubs and promises delivery in three hours or less.

Why Home Depot ranks #39

Home Depot ranks #39 with a WCRC Power Score of 74.01, just behind Enterprise and Chase and just ahead of Airbnb and Uber. Its positioning and recall are strong, and its Pro business adds financial strength. It trails Enterprise and Chase slightly on service image and digital engagement. It edges Airbnb and Uber on consumer trust and the steady, everyday role it plays in homeowners' lives.

The Achilles' heel

Home Depot depends on the housing market, and big projects remain scarce. In its August 2026 results, CFO Richard McPhail said customers "continued to engage in smaller projects." Its fiscal 2026 outlook calls for comparable sales growth of only flat to 2%. Leadership is also in flux, with chief executive Ted Decker on temporary medical leave since August 2026.

The 2026 story

2026 tested Home Depot's bench. On Aug. 12 it said CEO Ted Decker was taking temporary medical leave, with senior executive vice president Ann-Marie Campbell running day-to-day operations and CFO Richard McPhail overseeing finance and the Pro subsidiaries. Six days later it reported second-quarter sales up 5.7% and comparable sales up 1.7%, beating its own expectations, and reaffirmed its full-year guidance. The same month it launched express delivery nationwide and promoted wider use of its Magic Apron AI assistant in stores.
