What makes Universal powerful

Universal turns films into places people can visit. Its studio had a standout 2026. By late September, Universal had passed $5 billion at the global box office, the first studio to do so that year and only the third time in its history. Three of its 2026 releases passed $1 billion worldwide: The Odyssey, Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The Odyssey, at about $1.7 billion, became Universal's biggest film ever.

Its theme parks give those stories a physical home. Epic Universe opened at Universal Orlando Resort in May 2025, and it led growth in Comcast's theme park revenue, which rose 2.7% to about $2.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Partners such as Illumination, the animation studio behind the Mario films, help feed a broad slate, from family animation to adult dramas, which keeps the Universal name in front of almost every kind of audience.

As of late September 2026, three Universal releases had passed $1 billion worldwide that year: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael and The Odyssey.

Why Universal ranks #33

Universal ranks #33 with a WCRC Power Score of 74.41, a fraction behind Cisco and Domino's Pizza and just ahead of ServiceNow and AMD. Its positioning and recall are strong thanks to its films and parks. It trails Cisco on financial strength and Domino's on digital engagement. It edges ServiceNow and AMD because ordinary consumers know it and spend time with its stories.

The Achilles' heel

Universal's results swing with hits and tourism. In the second quarter of 2026 Comcast's theme park adjusted EBITDA fell 5.1%, and the company said attendance at its Orlando resort fell below expectations, softening from June into the third quarter. Universal Studios Japan was hurt by China-related travel restrictions. A weak film slate or a soft travel year can quickly undo a strong year.

The 2026 story

2026 was a standout year for Universal at the box office. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the year's first $1 billion film in June, followed by Michael and The Odyssey. In August Universal became the first studio to cross $4 billion globally in 2026, and in September it passed $5 billion. By then The Odyssey ranked as the year's No. 2 film worldwide. In Orlando, Epic Universe drew a strong guest response in its second year, though Comcast said resort attendance had softened.
