What makes AMD powerful

AMD designs chips for PCs, servers and AI data centers, and it has become a leading challenger to Nvidia in AI accelerators. Its data center revenue reached $8.5 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 97%, driven by EPYC server processors and the new Instinct MI450 Series GPUs. Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle are running workloads on its first Helios rack-scale systems.

The biggest AI buyers are signing long commitments. In October 2025 OpenAI agreed to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, and in February 2026 Meta struck its own 6-gigawatt deal. AMD has not given up the PC either. Its client revenue rose 7% in the third quarter of 2026. Chief executive Lisa Su expects growth to speed up further in the fourth quarter as Helios systems and the next EPYC chips, code-named Venice, scale up in production.

AMD's data center revenue nearly doubled in the third quarter of 2026, rising 97% from a year earlier.

Why AMD ranks #35

AMD ranks #35 with a WCRC Power Score of 74.33, just behind Universal and ServiceNow and just ahead of ESPN and Enterprise. Its product and innovation strength is high, and its financial momentum is strong. It trails Universal on consumer recall and ServiceNow on recurring revenue. It edges ESPN and Enterprise thanks to fast growth and its central place in AI infrastructure.

The Achilles' heel

AMD still chases Nvidia in AI and relies on Taiwan's TSMC to make its wafers. Factory space at TSMC is in heavy demand, and CNBC reported in January 2026 that Nvidia was set to replace Apple as TSMC's largest customer. AMD's gaming business is also shrinking. Gaming revenue fell 40% in the third quarter of 2026 as semi-custom and graphics sales dropped.

The 2026 story

AMD's 2026 was about scaling AI. In February Meta signed a deal to use 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs. AMD then launched its Instinct MI450 Series, and by November its first Helios rack-scale systems were running workloads for Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle. On Nov. 3 AMD reported record third-quarter revenue, up 45%, with data center revenue nearly doubling. It guided to fourth-quarter growth of roughly 66% from a year earlier.
