Santander

Santander is a Spanish banking group founded in 1857, with its legal home in Santander and operations run from Boadilla del Monte near Madrid. It serves about 180 million customers across key markets including Brazil, Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Poland, Chile and Portugal. It posted record attributable profit of €14.1bn in 2025, up 12%, and in 2026 completed the purchases of UK bank TSB and of Webster Bank in the US. WCRC's research found the brand strongest in financial stability, after Fitch upgraded it to A+ in May 2026, in a distinctive red flame logo, in its competitive financial position, and in digital delivery through Openbank and a group-wide app platform.

What WCRC found

  1. Strong financial stability, upgraded by Fitch to A+ (stable) in May 2026.

  2. Distinctive visual identity built on the red flame logo, recognised across its core markets.

  3. Growing franchise of about 180 million customers, expanded in 2026 by the TSB and Webster Bank acquisitions.

What holds it back: Customer advocacy and online reputation are not well evidenced, and legacy controversies such as Madoff exposure and executive severance still shape perceptions.
