What makes Nubank powerful

Nubank's power comes from doing banking with almost none of the friction customers expect. It has no branches, delivers every product through its app and serves 131.0 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, 113 million of them in Brazil. Its WCRC pillars are unusually even: Consumer Trust & Sentiment at 79.7, Brand Positioning & Recall at 79.6 and Product, Innovation & Delivery at 78.6. For a bank, scoring highest on trust is rare, and it reflects a brand built in reaction to the queues, fees and fine print of Latin American banking.

Delivery is the engine. Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery scores 90, Nubank's highest parameter, and Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption 88. The model is lean: Nu reports an efficiency ratio of 20.7%, meaning operating costs take only about a fifth of revenue, which leaves room for lower fees. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 86: the purple card and the promise to fight banking complexity have stayed the same since its founding in 2013, while the product range has grown into accounts, loans, insurance and investments. In 2025 Nu earned net income of US$2.87bn, with a return on equity of about 30%.

Its weaker areas are governance and scale of balance sheet. Sustainability, Governance & ESG is its lowest pillar at 66.2, and Corporate Governance Transparency scores 64 because a dual-class share structure gives the founder control. S&P's international rating of BB-, set in 2023, sits below most global banks because it is capped by Brazil's sovereign rating. Nubank's power is that of a challenger which has become the mainstream choice in its home market and now exports the model.

Why Nubank ranks #39

Nubank's brand power rests on fully digital banking at very large scale, early adoption of new technology and a positioning so clear that its purple card became shorthand for a new kind of bank. It serves 131.0 million customers from an app alone.

  1. 3.08Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery90

Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery: every Nubank product is delivered through its app to 131.0 million customers, at an efficiency ratio of 20.7%. It is Nubank's highest-scoring parameter, at 90.

  2. 5.06Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption88

Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption: Nubank is a digital-native platform operating at 131-million-customer scale, launching accounts, credit, insurance and investments in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia without a single branch.

  3. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence86

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: since 2013 Nubank has stood for one idea, removing complexity from banking, and its purple card and fee-light products have kept that message consistent across every new market.

The Achilles' heel

4.04Corporate Governance Transparency64

Corporate Governance Transparency scores 64, Nubank's lowest. Nu Holdings is listed on the NYSE but uses a dual-class share structure that keeps control with its founder, and it publishes little independently verified sustainability data.

What would move it: Adding more independent board oversight and publishing audited ESG and governance disclosures would close the gap with established global banks.

The 2026 story

Nubank kept growing fast in 2025 and into 2026. Customers rose 15% to 131.0 million by the end of 2025, and the share of active customers reached 83.4%. Average monthly revenue per active customer rose to US$13.3.

The financial results were the strongest in its history. Managerial total revenue reached US$16.3bn in 2025, up 45% on an FX-neutral basis, and net income rose to US$2.87bn. Return on equity was about 30%, a level few banks anywhere reach.

The risks come with the growth. Nubank is expanding credit fast in Mexico and Colombia, where it must prove its model works outside Brazil, and regulators watch fast-growing lenders closely. Its international credit rating remains below investment grade, constrained by Brazil's sovereign rating.

Five-year comparison

Official figures as reported, USD m. Nu Holdings Ltd. IFRS consolidated statements (calendar years). Banks do not report operating income, so the second column is income before income taxes. Nu's managerial presentation shows 2025 total revenue of US$16,319.6m, the figure in WCRC's financials file; the audited IFRS total is US$15,774.7m.

WCRC analysis

Nu's IFRS revenue rose more than ninefold, from US$1.7bn in 2021 to US$15.8bn in 2025, growing every year. The swing in profit is just as sharp: a pre-tax loss of US$309m in 2022 turned into pre-tax income of US$1.5bn in 2023 and US$3.9bn in 2025.

2023 was the turning point, the year Nubank proved its low-cost digital model could be very profitable at scale. Pre-tax income has since grown faster than revenue. That combination of growth and profit is what lets a young brand stand among established global names, and it funds its push into Mexico and Colombia.
