What makes ESPN powerful
ESPN is the first stop for sports for many Americans, on television, in its app and across social media. Since Aug. 21, 2025, fans have been able to buy ESPN directly, with no cable subscription. The Unlimited plan costs $29.99 a month and bundles ESPN's TV networks, ESPN+ and about 47,000 live events a year, plus replays, studio shows and original programming.
Its rights portfolio keeps fans coming back. WWE premium live events, including WrestleMania and SummerSlam, now stream on the ESPN app under a five-year deal. In August 2025 ESPN also agreed to acquire NFL Network and other NFL media assets in exchange for a 10% stake in ESPN. Those deals tie the brand more closely to the most-watched sport in the country and to a younger, streaming-first audience.

Why ESPN ranks #36
ESPN sits at #36 with a WCRC Power Score of 74.29, just behind ServiceNow and AMD and just ahead of Enterprise and Chase. Its positioning and recall are among the strongest in sports media, and its stand-alone app adds digital strength. It trails ServiceNow and AMD on growth and financial momentum. It edges Enterprise and Chase on the emotional connection it builds with fans.
The Achilles' heel
ESPN pays heavily for sports rights while the cable bundle that long funded them keeps shrinking. CNBC argued in August 2025 that its historic streaming launch might actually cost it subscribers. The NFL deal also hands the league a 10% equity stake in ESPN, which Disney owns with Hearst. Every major rights renewal now tests whether streaming can pay the bills that cable once covered.
The 2026 story
2026 was ESPN's first full year as a stand-alone streaming service. WWE premium live events, from the Royal Rumble to SummerSlam, moved from Peacock to the ESPN app under a deal that runs through 2030. Monday Night Football remained a pillar, after ESPN said its 2025 regular season averaged 15.8 million viewers, its second most-watched in 20 years of airing the franchise. Its August 2025 agreement to take over NFL Network, in exchange for a 10% stake, points to an even deeper NFL partnership.
