What makes Google powerful
Google is the habit behind how most people find things online. Search, Chrome, Maps, Gmail and Android put the brand in front of billions of people every day, and that daily use feeds the advertising business that funds the rest of Alphabet. The brand's strength is that people trust it to give a quick answer, and they come back many times a day.
Google is now turning that habit into AI. AI Mode in Search crossed 1 billion users after its global rollout, and in August 2026 Sundar Pichai said more than 1 billion people use the Gemini app every month. Google also builds its own AI chips, called TPUs, which help drive demand for Google Cloud. In October 2026 it said search query growth was the highest in five years, a sign that AI answers are adding to search use rather than replacing it.
Google's Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users in August 2026, a product Sundar Pichai called Google's fastest-growing ever.
Why Google ranks #2
Google sits at #2 in the US ranking, just behind Apple at #1 and ahead of Nvidia at #3. Its reach is matched by few brands, and it scores strongly across the five WCRC pillars, from positioning and recall to digital and financial strength. Apple edges ahead on consumer trust and on the loyalty its devices create. Nvidia has faster momentum in AI hardware, but Google's brand touches far more people every day, which keeps it in second place.
The Achilles' heel
Google's risk is that its core habit can be broken. AI chatbots offer people another way to get answers, and search ads are still the heart of the business. Courts are also reshaping how Google wins its default spots. In September 2025, Judge Amit Mehta let Google keep Chrome but barred exclusive search distribution deals and ordered it to share some search data with rivals.
The 2026 story
Google spent 2025 and 2026 proving that AI could grow search rather than shrink it. In September 2025 a federal judge set the remedies in the US search antitrust case, letting Google keep Chrome and Android while banning exclusive default deals. AI Mode then expanded globally from October 2025 and crossed 1 billion users by July 2026. In August 2026 Sundar Pichai said the Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly users, calling it Google's fastest-growing product ever. In late October 2026, Alphabet said Google Cloud revenue had doubled from a year earlier and that search query growth was the highest in five years.
