A channel can look expendable when the dashboard credits few sales to it. Removing it may still reduce demand elsewhere. Conversely, a channel claiming many conversions may be collecting credit for purchases that would have happened anyway.
That is why a budget decision needs a statement of the channel’s purpose before it needs a ranking of channels. Awareness, customer acquisition and retention require different evidence.
Write the decision before reading the result
WCRC would ask a marketing team to define what would make a cut reasonable. Is the concern poor incremental demand, unaffordable acquisition or customers who do not return? A decision rule written in advance is harder to adjust opportunistically when results disappoint.
Google’s measurement discussion distinguishes tools that help examine different parts of this problem. It remains guidance from an advertising supplier, not evidence of any US company’s actual return. Source.
A planned reduction or experiment should account for the time between exposure and purchase. An immediate sales comparison can miss a longer response. Where a controlled test is impractical, the analysis should state which alternative explanations remain unresolved.
Protect the meaning of brand investment
Powerful Brands’ Brand Positioning & Recall dimension provides a useful question: what makes the brand recognisable and chosen? That question can inform measurement, but it cannot be answered by labelling every difficult-to-attribute activity “brand building”.
The business should identify an observable objective and a proportionate way to examine it. It should also track commercial consequences such as customer quality, repeat purchase and contribution. A favourable awareness result does not automatically justify any level of spending.
The commissioned US case still requires a documented budget decision and subsequent evidence. This method does not prescribe a cut. It asks what evidence would make the decision defensible, what uncertainty remains and how the company would recognise that the cut had gone too far.
