#81 ESPN
ESPN is ranked #81 in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, with a WCRC Power Score of 74.29. It is the only sports broadcaster in the edition, powered by a sports-only position held for decades, premium rights from the NFL to the NBA and a fast-growing streaming business.

How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 74.29.
ESPN's power is focus. It has done one thing, sport, for decades, and in the United States its name has become shorthand for watching it. That gives ESPN a Positioning Clarity & Coherence score of 88, its highest WCRC parameter, and Cultural & Contextual Relevance of 84: ESPN is part of how Americans follow the NFL, the NBA, college sport and almost everything in between. Its Brand Positioning & Recall pillar score is 80.2.
The second driver is what it carries. ESPN holds premium rights to the NFL, the NBA and college sport, gained exclusive rights to WWE's premium live events from September 2025, and runs about 45 international channels in around 110 countries. Product Portfolio Strength & Logic scores 86. In August 2025 it launched ESPN Unlimited, a direct-to-consumer streaming service sold alone or bundled with Disney+ and Hulu, and in October 2025 agreed a deal to take over NFL media assets in exchange for a 10% stake. That digital shift lifts its Digital Presence & Financial Soundness score to 79.8, the 30th-highest in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026.
The business is profitable. Disney's Sports segment, which ESPN dominates, earned operating income of US$2,882m in fiscal 2025, up 20%, on revenue of US$17,672m. But revenue barely moved, and the old cable model is shrinking: the ESPN channel had about 61 million subscribers in September 2025. Consumer Trust & Sentiment, at 68.8, is one of the lowest pillar scores in the edition, and loyalty is ESPN's Achilles heel.
Why ESPN ranks #81
ESPN's strongest WCRC parameters come from doing one thing for a very long time: covering sport, with the rights and the reach to make it the default.
1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence88
Positioning Clarity & Coherence: ESPN has been a sports-only network for decades and is the reference sports channel in the United States, a position no rival has shaken.
3.05Product Portfolio Strength & Logic86
Product Portfolio Strength & Logic: linear channels, the ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited streaming tiers and about 45 international channels in around 110 countries form one coherent sports offer.
1.08Cultural & Contextual Relevance84
Cultural & Contextual Relevance: ESPN is woven into American sports culture, from NFL and NBA coverage to WWE's premium live events, which it has carried exclusively since September 2025.
The Achilles' heel
2.06Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy62
Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy scores 62, the weakness WCRC flags for ESPN. Cord-cutting keeps eroding its cable base, with the ESPN channel down to about 61 million subscribers in September 2025, and streaming viewers can cancel at any time.
What would move it: Turning ESPN Unlimited into a habit, with personalised coverage, fantasy and betting tools and bundles that reward staying, would replace the loyalty that the cable bundle used to guarantee.
The 2026 story
ESPN's 2026 is its first full year as a streaming brand. ESPN Unlimited launched in August 2025, sold on its own and in bundles with Disney+ and Hulu, and in October 2025 ESPN agreed to take over NFL media assets in exchange for a 10% stake, a deal still pending.
The financial picture is mixed. Disney's Sports segment grew operating income 20% to US$2,882m in fiscal 2025, but revenue was flat at US$17,672m as linear subscribers kept falling. ESPN BET, its sportsbook partnership with PENN, ended on 1 December 2025 and was replaced by a deal with DraftKings.
The risk is that ESPN's cultural weight does not carry over to streaming quickly enough. Brand Extension Credibility, at 64, reflects the short life of ESPN BET, and recurring layoffs have weighed on its image as an employer.
