Steven Madden Ltd. reported on 5 November that revenue rose 15.7% to $772.6 million for the quarter ended 30 September. Wholesale revenue increased 19.4% to $528.7 million. On the earnings call, management discussed the timing of shipments alongside the performance of its brands. Those are separate contributors to a wholesale figure. A delivery can lift the supplier’s quarterly sales when it arrives at a retailer. The shopper may buy the product weeks later, or the retailer may have to mark it down. For a footwear company, the difference shows up in decisions about which sizes and colours to reorder. A shipment report will tell the buying team what reached the network. A sell-through report will tell it what moved off the shelves.

    Look for a second order

WCRC’s Product, Innovation & Delivery pillar directs attention to product availability and what happens in the channel after launch. A good test would follow an opening order by style, channel and week. What share sold at full price? Were the most common sizes available? Did the retailer reorder once the initial batch sold? A reorder at the same price provides a different signal from a second shipment that was already committed in the original agreement. Powerful Brands, Product, Innovation & Delivery

Management also discussed different rates of direct-to-consumer comparable sales growth at Kurt Geiger and Dolce Vita. Those disclosures can help identify which products merit closer review. They come from the company’s own channels and cannot stand in for sell-through across wholesale partners. One label’s mix of shops, concessions and online sales can also differ from another’s. The next useful comparison is at product level. Match retailer sell-through and reorder data to the timing of the first delivery and compare similar launch windows. That would show where stronger wholesale shipments tracked underlying demand and where the quarter simply captured orders that moved sooner. Neither the release nor the call supplies that matched dataset. Steve Madden financial results Earnings call transcript
