Wendy’s reported on 5 November that international systemwide sales rose 3.5% in the third quarter while international same-restaurant sales fell 2.2%. Both figures use constant currency and exclude Argentina. US same-restaurant sales fell 5.7%. The distinction between the two international numbers is easy to miss on a day when the company also rejected a buyout proposal. Wendy’s financial results Associated Press

Systemwide sales count purchases across both company-operated and franchised restaurants. They can rise as new outlets are added. Wendy’s includes new restaurants in its comparable measure after 15 continuous months of operation, subject to the definitions in its release. A new restaurant can therefore contribute to the total before it enters the comparable group. The two measures answer different questions about the same network. Wendy’s financial results

Two groups of restaurants, two decisions

WCRC’s Product, Innovation & Delivery pillar gives operators a way to examine how a brand promise translates into restaurant performance. For established locations, separate changes in visits from changes in the amount spent per visit. If visits are falling, a higher average bill can soften the sales decline while giving the operator little information about why people stopped coming. Tests of menu availability, order accuracy and wait times would help narrow the cause. Powerful Brands, Product, Innovation & Delivery

For newer locations, follow opening cohorts through their first year and into the comparable base. Look for the time it takes for visits to settle after the initial launch, and whether a franchisee can sustain the resulting sales with ordinary staffing and promotion costs. A new location can add revenue to the system from day one while the franchisee is still working towards a viable operating margin.

The release gives the two measures and the network totals. It does not break down visits, average checks or restaurant economics by international market. Wendy’s financial results The next comparison should pair newer and mature locations in the same market. That would tell operators where the network is adding sales through expansion and where it is building demand that lasts after an opening.
