What makes ASML powerful
ASML is powerful because no one can make a leading-edge chip without its machines. It is the world's only supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, which print the finest circuits on chips for AI, phones and data centres. In the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 its strongest pillar is Product, Innovation & Delivery at 83.0, with Innovation Pipeline & R&D Orientation at 98 and Future Readiness & Strategic Relevance at 96. Brand Differentiation Index also scores 98: a monopoly on a critical technology is as differentiated as a brand can be.
Its customers have nowhere else to go, and they know it. First-Choice Consumer Preference scores 96 and Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy 95, because TSMC, Samsung and Intel all depend on ASML for their most advanced production. That gives it a Consumer Trust & Sentiment pillar of 76.7. In 2026 ASML deepened those ties, working with Intel Foundry on High-NA EUV readiness and with TSMC on large photomasks for High-NA EUV.
The financial results are strong and visible years ahead. Total net sales rose 15.6% to EUR 32.7bn in 2025, income from operations reached EUR 11.3bn and net income EUR 9.6bn, with a year-end order backlog of EUR 38.8bn. Sustainability, Governance & ESG is solid at 73.8, supported by a net zero target for 2040. The weak spot is recall: ASML sells only to chipmakers, so most consumers have never heard of it, which holds Brand Positioning & Recall at 70.0.
Why ASML ranks #58
ASML's three highest-rated strengths come from a position no rival has matched: it alone makes EUV machines, it keeps pushing the technology forward, and every leading chipmaker has to buy from it.
1.04Brand Differentiation Index98
Brand Differentiation Index: ASML is the only maker of EUV lithography systems, the machines that pattern the world's most advanced chips.
3.02Innovation Pipeline & R&D Orientation98
Innovation Pipeline & R&D Orientation: its next-generation High-NA EUV systems are moving into production with Intel and TSMC, and a new Eindhoven campus was announced in September 2026.
2.04First-Choice Consumer Preference96
First-Choice Consumer Preference: for leading-edge chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung and Intel, ASML's EUV tools are the only option.
The Achilles' heel
1.02Unaided Brand Recall55
Unaided Brand Recall scores 55, one of ASML's lowest results. Outside the semiconductor industry and investor circles few people know the name, even though nearly every advanced chip depends on its machines.
What would move it: Plain-language storytelling about what its machines make possible, through campus visits, education programmes and public exhibitions, would lift recall without changing its business-to-business model.
The 2026 story
ASML entered 2026 with a record order book. Net bookings reached EUR 28.0bn in 2025 and the backlog stood at EUR 38.8bn at year end. Management guided 2026 net sales of EUR 34bn to EUR 39bn, and third-quarter 2026 net sales came in at EUR 11.7bn with net income of EUR 5.0bn.
The technology agenda moved forward. In September 2026 ASML announced a collaboration with Intel Foundry to speed up High-NA EUV readiness, plans for a new campus in Eindhoven, and a joint initiative with TSMC on large-format photomasks for High-NA EUV.
Geopolitics is the main risk. Export controls limit what ASML can sell to China, once one of its largest markets, and a December 2025 news report said China had built a prototype EUV machine with help from former ASML engineers. So far demand from AI chipmakers has more than offset the lost sales.

WCRC analysis
Only the last two years could be confirmed from official documents opened for this edition. Total net sales rose 15.6% from EUR 28.3bn in 2024 to EUR 32.7bn in 2025, and income from operations rose 25% to EUR 11.3bn.
The operating margin widened from 31.9% to 34.6%, showing that ASML can grow profit faster than sales even while export controls limit sales to China. A brand with no direct competitor in its core product can hold its prices, and those margins pay for the next generation of machines.
