What makes WhatsApp powerful

WhatsApp's power is habit at planetary scale. More than 3 billion people use it each month, and in countries such as India and Brazil it is the default way families, friends and small businesses talk. That gives WhatsApp equal top marks of 82.0 on Brand Positioning & Recall and Consumer Trust & Sentiment, its two strongest pillars. First-Choice Consumer Preference scores 94, Top-of-Mind Awareness 92 and Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy 92. Network effects do the rest: every new user makes the app more useful for everyone already on it, so people join because their contacts are there and stay for the same reason.

The product earns that loyalty by staying simple. Messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, the interface has changed little, and the service works on cheap phones and weak networks. Product, Innovation & Delivery scores 78.5, with Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery at 92. WhatsApp keeps adding features without clutter: usernames in June 2026, an optional WhatsApp Plus subscription from May 2026, and calls with people who do not use the app from October 2026. Meta's financial strength sits behind it. Meta earned revenue of US$201.0bn in 2025, and its debt is rated Aa3 by Moody's.

The weakness is regulation. Sustainability, Governance & ESG is WhatsApp's lowest pillar at 61.1. Russia blocked the service in February 2026, the European Union is applying digital-market rules and an antitrust probe, and security researchers showed in 2025 that phone numbers of 3.5 billion users could be harvested through contact discovery. Users have not left, but these issues cap the brand's trust.

Why WhatsApp ranks #33

WhatsApp's three strongest parameters all describe a habit: people choose it first, think of it first, and keep using it.

  1. 2.04First-Choice Consumer Preference94

First-Choice Consumer Preference: for more than 3 billion monthly users, WhatsApp is the first choice for personal messaging, and in markets such as India and Brazil it is the default.

  2. 1.03Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA)92

Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA): when people think of sending a message or making a free call, WhatsApp is the name that comes up, from Europe to Latin America and South Asia.

  3. 2.06Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy92

Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy: because contacts, groups and chat history live in the app, few users leave; WhatsApp passed 3 billion monthly users in 2025.

The Achilles' heel

4.08ESG Ratings & Regulatory Compliance50

ESG Ratings & Regulatory Compliance scores 50, WhatsApp's lowest parameter. It faces EU digital-market obligations and an EU antitrust probe in 2026, Russia blocked it in February 2026, and a contact-discovery flaw exposed phone numbers of 3.5 billion users until it was fixed in October 2025.

What would move it: Publishing clear, brand-level reporting on privacy, security and regulatory compliance, and resolving the EU cases, would lift this parameter and strengthen trust.

The 2026 story

WhatsApp changed leaders in 2026. In June Meta named Kunal Shah, founder of the Indian fintech company CRED, as head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart after seven years.

The product kept moving. WhatsApp launched an optional WhatsApp Plus subscription on 27 May 2026, opened username reservations in June, and in October let users invite anyone, including people without the app, to a WhatsApp call. Business messaging remains the main route to revenue, which Meta reports inside its Family of Apps segment.

The risks are political and regulatory. Russia fully blocked WhatsApp on 11 February 2026, the app has been unavailable in China's App Store since 2024, and the EU is pressing Meta on competition rules. Spyware attacks on journalists and activists have also tested its security promise.

WCRC analysis

Meta's revenue grew 70% in five years, from US$117.9bn in 2021 to US$201.0bn in 2025. The defining moment was 2022, when revenue dipped and operating income fell 38% as advertising weakened and costs rose. Since then operating income has nearly tripled, reaching US$83.3bn.

These figures describe Meta, not WhatsApp alone, but they matter for the brand. Operating margin recovered from 25% in 2022 to 41% in 2025, giving Meta the means to keep WhatsApp free and ad-free in chats while it builds business messaging, the revenue model behind the brand's future.
