World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 · Second Global Mega Edition
#40 Formula 1
Formula 1 is ranked #40 in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, with a WCRC Power Score of 76.94. It is the only sports championship in the ranking, and its power comes from a property nobody can copy: the world championship of motor racing, held every year since 1950.
Five WCRC pillars, 50 parameters, each scored 0 to 100 against global sector peers. The pillar weights set how much each one counts toward the Power Score.

How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 76.94.
Formula 1's power starts with scarcity. There is one world championship for the fastest racing cars on earth, and Formula 1 owns it. That is why Brand Differentiation Index is its highest WCRC parameter, at 90, and why Brand Positioning & Recall is its strongest pillar, at 84.2. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 88: the 'pinnacle of motorsport' claim has held since the first championship season in 1950. The F1 logo, the team liveries and the sound of the cars are recognisable far beyond the sport's core fans, and Visual Identity Distinctiveness scores 86.
The sport has also found new audiences. Cultural & Contextual Relevance scores 86 as Formula 1 has reached younger and American fans, helped by documentary series and a feature film, and Share of Voice vs Share of Market scores 86 because its coverage runs far ahead of its commercial size. Social Media Presence & Engagement scores 88, one of its three strongest marks, and its digital product, F1 TV, puts live timing and onboard footage in fans' hands. Digital Presence & Financial Soundness is its second pillar at 78.6, and the money is moving the right way: in 2025 Formula 1 revenue rose 14% to US$3,873m and operating income rose 28% to US$632m.
Product, Innovation & Delivery follows at 78.4. 2026 brought the biggest reset in years, with new power units, sustainable fuels and an eleventh team in Cadillac, though the energy-management rules drew criticism and are already being adjusted. The weak pillar is Sustainability, Governance & ESG, at 61.6. Racing in countries with poor human-rights records draws accusations of sportswashing, and flying a global circus around the world sits awkwardly with its net-zero 2030 target. Formula 1 is powerful because it owns a spectacle that is impossible to replicate.
Why Formula 1 ranks #40
Formula 1 owns something unique, says what it is clearly, and talks to a huge digital audience. Its three strongest WCRC parameters reflect exactly that.
1.04Brand Differentiation Index90
Brand Differentiation Index: Formula 1 is the FIA world championship for single-seater racing, held since 1950, and no rival series offers the same mix of speed, technology and global reach.
1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence88
Positioning Clarity & Coherence: the 'pinnacle of motorsport' positioning has held since 1950, and the 2026 rules, with new power units and sustainable fuels, keep the technology story at its centre.
5.01Social Media Presence & Engagement Quality88
Social Media Presence & Engagement Quality: Formula 1 has a very large and active social following, and its F1 TV streaming service brings fans closer to every session.
The Achilles' heel
4.06Supply Chain Ethics & Responsible Sourcing54
Supply Chain Ethics & Responsible Sourcing scores 54, Formula 1's lowest. Races in host countries with poor human-rights records draw recurring accusations of sportswashing, which weigh on the sport's ethical standing.
What would move it: Publishing clear human-rights criteria for host contracts and reporting on how they are applied would answer the criticism with evidence.
The 2026 story
2026 was a season of change. New technical and power-unit regulations came into force and Cadillac joined as the eleventh team. Drivers' concerns about energy management led to an agreed shift in the engine power split to 58/42 in 2027 and 60/40 in 2028. The cost cap for teams was set at US$215m.
The business kept growing. In 2025 Formula 1 revenue rose 14% to US$3,873m, operating income rose 28% to US$632m and adjusted OIBDA rose 20% to US$946m. In July 2025 owner Liberty Media completed its purchase of 84% of Dorna, the owner of MotoGP and WorldSBK, and placed it under the Formula One Group.
The risks are regulatory and reputational. Rule changes can upset fans if racing quality dips, cost-cap disputes recur, and calendar choices keep human rights and travel emissions in the spotlight. Ten of the eleven teams have a base in England, many in Oxfordshire's 'Motorsport Valley'.
