What makes John Deere powerful

John Deere's power is the power of a single idea held for a very long time. To farmers around the world the name means one thing, dependable machinery for working the land, and Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 92, the 14th highest result for that parameter in the top 100. The green-and-yellow livery and leaping deer are recognised on any field or road, giving Visual Identity Distinctiveness a score of 89. Brand Positioning & Recall is its strongest WCRC pillar at 80.9, and First-Choice Consumer Preference reaches 86: in agricultural machinery, Deere is the default.

The product side keeps that loyalty earned. Product, Innovation & Delivery scores 77.0, built on precision agriculture, autonomy and connected machines that turn tractors and combines into data platforms. Innovation Pipeline, Portfolio Strength and Future Readiness each score 84, and the portfolio reaches from large farms to turf care, construction, forestry and the financing that helps customers buy. The balance sheet matters too. Moody's rates Deere A1, S&P A and Fitch A+, so Financial Stability Indicator scores 87 even in a down year.

That down year is real. Net sales and revenues fell 11.7% to US$45.7bn in fiscal 2025 and net income dropped from US$7.1bn to US$5.0bn, with guidance for fiscal 2026 lower again at US$4.0-4.75bn. The brand's Achilles heel is repair. A US Federal Trade Commission lawsuit over restrictions on farmers fixing their own machines was settled in July 2026 with a ten-year repair-access remedy, after a separate US$99m class settlement in April. Service Recovery & Complaint Perception scores 54, Deere's lowest.

Why John Deere ranks #66

John Deere's power comes from a positioning that has never drifted, a livery recognised on every continent where crops are grown, and the financial strength to keep investing through farm downturns. Brand Positioning & Recall, at 80.9, is its strongest WCRC pillar.

  1. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence92

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: John Deere has stood for farm machinery and nothing else at its core, and every extension, from turf to construction, sits close to that promise. It is the brand's top score, at 92.

  2. 1.10Visual Identity Distinctiveness89

Visual Identity Distinctiveness: the green-and-yellow livery and leaping deer are among the most recognised marks in industry. It scores 89.

  3. 5.07Financial Stability Indicator87

Financial Stability Indicator: Deere is rated A1 by Moody's, A by S&P and A+ by Fitch, and earned US$5.0bn of net income in fiscal 2025 despite a cyclical downturn. It scores 87.

The Achilles' heel

2.07Service Recovery & Complaint Perception54

Service Recovery & Complaint Perception scores 54, John Deere's lowest. Farmers' complaints that they could not repair their own machines led to a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit, joined by five states, settled on 8 July 2026 with a ten-year repair-access remedy, and a US$99m class settlement in April 2026.

What would move it: Delivering the promised repair access quickly and visibly, with tools, parts and software open to farmers and independent shops, would turn a reputational wound into a trust advantage.

The 2026 story

Deere spent 2026 working through a farm downturn. In fiscal 2025, which ended on 2 November 2025, net sales and revenues fell 11.7% to US$45,684m and net income attributable to Deere fell to US$5,027m from US$7,100m. Its outlook for fiscal 2026 pointed to net income of US$4.0-4.75bn.

The year also closed a long dispute. In April 2026 Deere agreed a US$99m class settlement over dealer-only repairs, without admitting wrongdoing, and on 8 July 2026 it settled the Federal Trade Commission's right-to-repair lawsuit, brought with five states, accepting a ten-year remedy that opens up repair access.

The long-term bet is technology. Precision agriculture, autonomy and connected machines are Deere's answer to labour shortages and pressure on farm margins, and its science-based climate targets aim to cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% and scope 3 by 30% by 2030 against 2021. Layoffs in 2024 and 2025 and the repair fight show that the brand's relationship with its people and customers needs care.
