What makes IKEA powerful

IKEA is powerful because almost everyone knows exactly what it stands for. The promise of a better everyday life for the many, delivered through democratic design, flat packs and low prices, has not changed in decades, and it is understood the same way in all of its markets. That clarity drives IKEA's strongest WCRC pillar, Positioning & Recall, at 85.8. Visual Identity Distinctiveness scores 94: the blue box and yellow letters are among the most recognisable marks in retail, and Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 92.

Scale turns recognition into habit. IKEA stores welcomed 915 million visits in the year to August 2025, up 1.9%, and total IKEA retail sales reached EUR 44.6bn. After price cuts in 2024, sales volumes rose 2.6%, showing that the low-price promise still moves customers. Online sales now account for 28% of IKEA retail sales, helping Digital Presence & Financial Soundness reach 77.0.

IKEA also scores well where many retailers struggle. Its 73.2 on Sustainability, Governance & ESG is the seventh highest in this edition, built on science-based climate targets, buy-back and resale services and the IKEA Foundation's philanthropy. The weak link inside that pillar is governance: ownership split between two foundations and a franchise structure make IKEA harder to scrutinise than a listed company. Sentiment has also softened, as falling retail sales in 2024 and 2025 and a recall of garlic presses dented its trust momentum.

Why IKEA ranks #24

IKEA's power comes from a brand that is easy to recognise, easy to understand and hard to imitate at its scale.

  1. 1.10Visual Identity Distinctiveness94

Visual Identity Distinctiveness: the blue-and-yellow box, the flat pack and the Swedish product names make IKEA recognisable at a glance, in all of its markets.

  2. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence92

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: "a better everyday life for the many people" has guided the range for decades, and IKEA backed it with price cuts that lifted volumes 2.6% in FY25.

  3. 1.04Brand Differentiation Index88

Brand Differentiation Index: self-assembly flat packs, showroom-and-warehouse stores and Scandinavian design give IKEA a format no competitor has matched globally.

The Achilles' heel

4.04Corporate Governance Transparency58

Corporate Governance Transparency scores 58, IKEA's lowest. The brand is owned by Inter IKEA, controlled by the Interogo Foundation, while most stores belong to the separate Ingka Group, and this foundation-and-franchise structure has drawn criticism over tax and transparency.

What would move it: Publishing consolidated, brand-wide financial and governance reporting across Inter IKEA and its franchisees, with clearer disclosure of the foundations' roles, would raise this score.

The 2026 story

IKEA changed leaders and simplified in 2026. Jakub Jankowski became CEO of Inter IKEA Group on 1 January, succeeding Jon Abrahamsson Ring. In May the group set out a strategy update to simplify operations around range, low prices and customer experience.

Results show a brand trading volume for margin. In the year to August 2025, total IKEA retail sales were EUR 44.6bn, down 1.0%, while volumes rose 2.6% and store visits reached 915 million. Inter IKEA Group revenue was EUR 26.3bn and operating profit fell to EUR 1.7bn as earlier price cuts worked through.

The risks are about experience and momentum. IKEA ended its SYMFONISK speaker partnership with Sonos in January 2026, after recalling more than 43,000 garlic presses in late 2025. Retail sales have now fallen for two years in a row, so the simplification plan needs to bring growth back.

Five-year comparison

Official figures as reported, EUR m. Inter IKEA Group consolidated total revenues and total operating income; fiscal years end 31 August. Inter IKEA owns the brand and supplies franchisees; total IKEA retail sales across all franchisees were EUR 41.9bn (FY21), 44.6bn (FY22), 47.6bn (FY23), 45.1bn (FY24) and 44.6bn (FY25).

WCRC analysis

Inter IKEA revenue rose from EUR 25.6bn in FY2021 to a peak of EUR 29.1bn in FY2023, then fell to EUR 26.3bn by FY2025 after the group cut wholesale prices. Over five years revenue is up only 2.7%, and total IKEA retail sales followed the same rise and fall.

Operating income has been volatile, from EUR 1.03bn in FY2022 to EUR 2.34bn in FY2024, before falling to EUR 1.73bn in FY2025. IKEA chose to protect its low-price promise over margins, a sign that it treats price as part of the brand.
