How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 76.10.
Mercado Libre is powerful because it built, market by market, the infrastructure Latin American shoppers and sellers rely on: the marketplace, the payment system, the credit line and the delivery van. In the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 its strongest pillar is Brand Positioning & Recall at 80.8, with Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA) at 88 and Cultural & Contextual Relevance at 88. Across its 18 markets it is the name people think of first for buying online, and Mercado Pago gives millions of them a second reason to open the app every day, to pay bills, save or borrow.
Its second strength is digital capability. Digital Presence & Financial Soundness scores 79.4, led by E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability at 96, among the highest in the ranking. In 2025 the platform served 121 million unique active buyers, handled US$65.0bn of gross merchandise volume and processed US$277.8bn of payments through Mercado Pago. Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery scores 88, helped by its own logistics network.
Growth is the third driver. Net revenues and financial income rose 39% to US$28.9bn in 2025, and second-quarter 2026 net revenue grew 50% to US$10.17bn. Credit agencies have followed: S&P raised Mercado Libre to investment grade (BBB-) in July 2025, after Fitch did so in October 2024. The weaker pillar is Sustainability, Governance & ESG at 64.0, where public evidence is thinner and a fast-growing loan book adds regulatory and credit exposure.
Why Mercado Libre ranks #48
Mercado Libre's three highest-rated strengths show a brand that owns online commerce in its region: it sells, it delivers, and it is the first name people think of.
5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability96
E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability: gross merchandise volume reached US$65.0bn in 2025 and US$21.9bn in the second quarter of 2026 alone.
3.08Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery88
Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery: Mercado Pago processed US$101bn of payments in the second quarter of 2026, and the company runs its own delivery network, Mercado Envios.
1.03Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA)88
Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA): with 121 million unique active buyers in 2025, Mercado Libre is the first stop for online shopping across most of Latin America.
The Achilles' heel
4.08ESG Ratings & Regulatory Compliance64
ESG Ratings & Regulatory Compliance scores 64, among Mercado Libre's weaker results. A 2022 data incident, tax disputes with local authorities and the rising regulatory weight of a credit book worth more than US$16bn all count against it.
What would move it: Fuller sustainability and governance disclosure, and clear reporting on credit quality and consumer protection in its lending business, would lift this score and the wider ESG pillar.
The 2026 story
2026 opened with a change at the top. Ariel Szarfsztejn became chief executive on 1 January, and founder Marcos Galperin, who led the company for 26 years, became executive chairman. The handover was planned and orderly.
Growth accelerated. Second-quarter 2026 net revenue rose 50% to US$10.17bn, gross merchandise volume rose 44% to US$21.9bn and total payment volume rose 56% to US$101bn. Fintech monthly active users grew about 30%, and the credit portfolio passed US$16bn.
That credit growth is also the main risk. Second-quarter net income fell 11% as the lending portfolio expanded 75%, increasing exposure to Latin American credit cycles. Competition from Amazon and Asian marketplaces in Brazil and Mexico adds pressure on margins.
Five-year comparison
Official figures as reported, USD m. MercadoLibre, Inc. consolidated 'net revenues and financial income' and income from operations, as restated in its FY2024 and FY2025 Form 10-K filings. FY2021 is left blank: it was only reported on the earlier basis (net revenues US$7,069m, which excluded financial income) and is not comparable.

WCRC analysis
On a comparable basis, revenue rose 2.7 times in three years, from US$10.8bn in 2022 to US$28.9bn in 2025, with growth of 40% in 2023, 38% in 2024 and 39% in 2025. Few companies of this size grow that fast for that long.
Income from operations tripled, from US$1.1bn to US$3.2bn, but the margin has slipped from 14.6% in 2023 to 11.1% in 2025 as Mercado Libre spent on logistics and credit to win share. The brand is buying scale and loyalty now, betting that a larger ecosystem will earn higher returns later.
